Diaries among Diaries is the third and final event in the three-year project, promoted and implemented thanks to the support of the Compagnia di San Paolo, bringing together two cultural powerhouses of the Piedmontese territory: a private institution and a public one, the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte and the Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino.
The 2018-2019 edition was elaborated and coordinated by the artist-cum-tutor Maria Morganti, with the project Diari tra Diari which explored the theme of diaristic expression in all its forms: visual, literary, technical, archivistic and musical.
The under-35 artists who took part in the project, chosen through a selection procedure on a national level, are Daniele Costa, Alice Mazzarella, Virginia Russolo, Davide Sgambaro and Caterina Silva. Together with the tutor and specialists from various cultural sectors (literary critics, art critics, historians, psychiatrists and archivists), the young artists interwove their own skills to bring out the energy that every recording of the passing of time withholds as a deposit of experience, knowledge and human values. The works that Maria Morganti and the artists produced over the nine-month period are the result of an individual and collective analysis, in which each single experience, with the progressive layering of reflections, was placed in dialogue with the others.
The project also drew on the precious collaboration of major cultural centres such as the Museo di antropologia criminale Cesare Lombroso of Turin (the Anthropology and Ethnography section), FLAT Fiera Libro Arte Torino which dedicated the monographic exposition of the 2018 edition to Dieter Roth and his diaries, the Piccolo Museo del Diario and the Fondazione Archivio Diaristico Nazionale of Pieve Santo Stefano (AR).
The project also foresaw various investigations into the theme of the diary through interdisciplinary encounters: the artist Stefano Arienti, the curator Elena Volpato, the historian Luca Pes, the art critic Cristina Baldacci, the psychiatrist and anthropologist Roberto Beneduce and the literary critic Nadia Fusini.
Stefano Arienti accompanied the reflections of the artists during the last phase of the event with the view to the final exhibition, supporting them in the creation process.
The exhibition at the Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte features the works of the artist-cum-tutor Maria Morganti, of the artist Stefano Arienti and those of the five young artists who took part in the project.
During the opening, the publication Diaries among Diaries will be presented: edited by Maria Morganti and Elena Volpato, and published by ViaIndustriae, Fondazione Spinola Banna per l’Arte and GAM Torino.
Maria Morganti’s work in progress Il sostituto: lo studio itinerante will remain on show until Sunday 9 June in the entrance hall of the GAM di Torino.
